How the five days run

Thanksgiving is the first real gap in the school year. It is short, which is exactly why it is dangerous: nobody plans for it. Winter break gets a packet and a newsletter paragraph. Thanksgiving gets a "have a great break" on Tuesday afternoon and a class on Monday that has forgotten how to line up, let alone how to regroup. The week after Thanksgiving is when I first hear "we never learned this" about a skill I taught in October.

The fix is small on purpose. One sheet of familiar math a day, for five of the days the kids are home, checked off on a tracker they keep themselves. I built the Thanksgiving line around that routine, one packet per grade from Kindergarten through 5th, and this page is the tour.

Why five days and not a holiday workbook

A packet has to be sized to the break or it does not come back. A thick November packet reads as a project, projects get postponed past the pie, and postponed projects arrive on Monday half blank. So each of these packets holds exactly five daily sets: a short warm up of easier problems to get the pencil moving, then one sheet, front and back. About fifteen minutes. That is the whole ask.

  • Five days matches the actual break, and the tracker says any five days count, so travel days and turkey day do not break the streak.
  • Every page is first-semester review only. Nothing new, so no adult has to teach on a holiday and no child is stuck waiting for help.
  • The warm up is the on-ramp. Easier problems first, so day three does not start with a groan.
  • An optional Challenge Day sits at the end, a notch harder, for the student who finishes day five and asks for more.

Built to be sent home, not just printed

A break packet lives or dies at the kitchen table, in front of an adult who has not thought about long division since their own 5th grade. So every packet opens with a one-page Note for Families that explains the routine in plain words: a warm up, one sheet a day, keys in the back, no screens, nothing to prep. A second page, What We Learned This Fall, translates each skill into parent language with the standard beside it, so "place value" means something at home. The answer keys are numbered to match every page, so checking day four takes a minute, not an argument. And a certificate at the back goes on the fridge when the five days are done.

For you, the prep is one trip to the copier the week before break. Hand the packets out before the final bell on Tuesday, and spend the Monday after teaching instead of reteaching.

What each grade reviews

Each packet reviews its own grade's fall, which is why there is one per grade rather than a generic "elementary" file. Every one follows the same five-day shape, so a family with a kindergartner and a 4th grader runs one routine at two different levels.

Kindergarten Thanksgiving math worksheets

A lot of what turns up for Thanksgiving math kindergarten worksheets is a single page: one turkey to count, one pattern to color. That fills a Friday afternoon, not a break. The Kindergarten packet is 26 pages and five days of counting, number recognition, comparing numbers, adding within 10, and shapes, with each question written to be read aloud. A five-year-old cannot read the directions yet, so the adult reads, the child answers, and the keys in the back settle it.

If you want Thanksgiving math worksheets for kindergarten that a family can run without you, the Kindergarten Thanksgiving Break Math Packet is $6.95.

1st grade Thanksgiving math packet

By late November a 1st grader has only just gotten the hang of tens and ones, and a skill that new is the first to slip over five days off. The 1st grade packet (27 pages, $6.95) reviews addition and subtraction facts, tens and ones, number patterns, and word problems, one sheet a day.

2nd grade Thanksgiving math packet

2nd grade fall is regrouping season, and regrouping is a procedure: it holds while it is practiced and fades when it is not. The 2nd grade packet (26 pages, 243 problems, $6.95) covers two-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, skip counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s, counting coins, and word problems within 100.

3rd grade Thanksgiving math packet

Thanksgiving math for 3rd grade is mostly about facts. Multiplication and division facts learned in October are the ones most likely to go soft over a long weekend. The 3rd grade packet (26 pages, 244 problems, $6.95) reviews multiplication and division facts, two- and three-digit addition and subtraction, rounding to the nearest ten and hundred, and one-step word problems. The sample pages above come from this packet.

4th grade Thanksgiving math packet

These Thanksgiving math sheets for 4th grade carry the heaviest procedures of the fall: two-digit multiplication, division with remainders, multi-digit addition and subtraction, large-number place value, and fractions with the same denominator. The 4th grade packet is 27 pages and 171 problems for $6.95.

5th grade Thanksgiving math packet

These are Thanksgiving math worksheets 5th grade students can finish on their own, which matters at an age when a parent may not remember long division. The 5th grade packet (27 pages, 184 problems, $6.95) reviews multi-digit multiplication, long division, large-number addition and subtraction, adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions, and expanded form.

The Kindergarten to 5th grade bundle (159 pages)

Singles are $6.95 per grade, Kindergarten through 5th. The bundle carries all six grades, Kindergarten through 5th, for $29.95: bought separately the six packets come to $41.70, so the bundle is the version I point teams toward, and it means the whole hallway goes home with the same routine.

Before that, Halloween week

The routine does not start at Thanksgiving. Four weeks earlier, the five-day Halloween math packets run the same shape through the loudest school week of the fall: a warm up and one sheet a day, Kindergarten through 5th grade, keys in the back. A class that has done Halloween week in October needs nothing explained in November; the note and the tracker are already familiar.

The dress rehearsal for December

Thanksgiving is the short break; winter is the long one. The two packets share a skeleton on purpose: the same family note, the same tracker, the same one-sheet-a-day rule. A family that runs five days in November already knows exactly what to do with the ten-day winter break packet in December, and by January the routine is just what this family does when school is out. Classes already on weekly homework take to it fastest of all, because to them it is not a holiday project. It is the normal sheet, at a different table.

Frequently asked questions

How much math is a Thanksgiving break packet per day?

A short warm up of easier problems, then one sheet, front and back. Most days take about fifteen minutes at the kitchen table. Five days cover the break, a tracker page lets kids check off each finished day, and an optional Challenge Day waits at the end for the child who wants a sixth.

Do parents have to teach anything over the break?

No. Every page reviews skills from the first months of the school year, so nothing inside is new teaching. A one-page Note for Families explains the routine, a What We Learned This Fall page translates each skill into plain words, and page-numbered answer keys in the back let any adult check the work in a minute.

Which days of the break count?

Any five. The tracker says so on the page. Wednesday travel day, Thursday itself, the long weekend, the Monday after: families pick the five that fit, and if a day gets missed they skip it or double up. The tracker is a rhythm, not a rule.

Is there a Thanksgiving math packet for kindergarten?

Yes, and one for 1st grade too, at $6.95 each. In the Kindergarten packet every question is written for a grown-up to read aloud, since a five-year-old cannot read the directions; it reviews counting, comparing, adding and shapes. The 1st grade packet keeps addition, subtraction, tens and ones and story problems ticking over. Both are also in the bundle, which covers Kindergarten through 5th grade, $29.95 for all six against $41.70 bought separately.

What does a 4th grade Thanksgiving math packet cover?

The 4th grade packet is 27 pages of fall review: two-digit multiplication, division with remainders, multi-digit addition and subtraction, large-number place value, and fractions with the same denominator. Each of the five days is a warm up and one sheet, front and back, and the answer keys are in the back. It is $6.95 on its own and is also part of the 2nd-5th grade bundle.

Are these Thanksgiving math worksheets a printable PDF?

Yes. Each packet is one printable PDF that you download from TpT and print on the school copier or a home printer. The family note, the tracker, the five days, the optional Challenge Day, the answer keys and the certificate are all in the same file. There is nothing to log in to and no screen involved at the kitchen table, which is the point of a break packet.

Do the packets include answer keys?

Yes. Every packet, Kindergarten through 5th grade, has answer keys in the back, numbered to match each page, so a parent can check a day in about a minute, and so can you when the packets come back on Monday.
