How Christmas week runs

The week before winter break is the hardest week of the year to teach a new lesson in. There is a concert, a class party and a countdown on the board, and the math block shrinks to whatever fits between them. These packets do not try to fight that. They keep the fall's math moving with a small routine that runs through all of it.

One routine for the whole week

  • Five days, three pages a day: a warm up of easier problems, then one sheet printed front and back.
  • Review only. Every page practices skills taught since September, so it needs no lesson in front of it.
  • A note and a skills guide up front, so any adult can run it, and a tracker the children check off themselves.
  • An optional Challenge Day at the end, a notch harder, for the student who asks for more.
  • Answer keys that name their pages, and a certificate for the finished week.

Kindergarten Christmas math packet

The Kindergarten packet (27 pages, 121 problems, $6.95) gives a short stretch of calm math each day: counting, writing numbers, comparing, shapes and first addition facts, with every question written out for an adult to read aloud.

1st grade Christmas math packet

The 1st grade packet (28 pages, 222 problems, $6.95) keeps addition and subtraction facts, tens and ones, number patterns and story problems moving, two skills to a side.

2nd grade Christmas math packet

The 2nd grade packet (27 pages, 252 problems, $6.95) gives two digit addition and subtraction every day, with coin counting, skip counting and two step story problems mixed in.

3rd grade Christmas math packet

The 3rd grade packet (28 pages, 279 problems, $6.95) asks for the facts the other way around: most fact pages give the missing factor, as in 6 × ___ = 42, and division works the same way. Rounding, addition and subtraction and one step story problems fill out the week, and the Challenge Day brings in facts with 11s and 12s.

4th grade Christmas math packet

The 4th grade packet (27 pages, 177 problems, $6.95) keeps two digit multiplication, division with remainders, fractions with like denominators and place value in use through the last week before break.

5th grade Christmas math packet

The 5th grade packet (28 pages, 188 problems, $6.95) runs long division, multi digit multiplication, fraction addition and place value in short daily pieces, so two weeks off do not undo them.

The Kindergarten to 5th grade bundle (165 pages)

The Christmas Math Packet bundle carries all six grades for $29.95, against $41.70 bought separately, so the whole hallway runs the same routine the same week.

Before and after the week

For the mornings of December there is December math morning work, one page a day for twenty school days. For the two weeks off, the ten-day winter break packets go home on the last day with the same note-and-tracker routine.

Frequently asked questions

How much math is a Christmas math packet per day?

A short warm up of easier problems, then one sheet, front and back, with two or three skills on each side. In class that fits the ten minutes after morning announcements; at home it is about fifteen minutes. Five days cover the week before break, and an optional Challenge Day waits at the end for the child who wants one more.

Is it new teaching or review?

Review. Every page practices skills the grade has learned since September, and nothing in it is new teaching. That is what makes it usable in the week of concerts and parties: whoever is in the room, a substitute or a parent, can run it without a lesson first.

What is Christmas about it?

The name, the colors and the words. The packet is called Christmas Week Math, the tracker is My Five Days of Christmas Math, and the season shows up in words: concerts, parties, the countdown, cocoa and snow days. The pages are white and print cleanly at home; the math is plain grade-level review.

How is it different from the winter break packets?

The Christmas packet is five days for the week before break, in class or at home. The winter break packets are ten days for the two weeks off, sent home on the last day. The two fit together: the Christmas week in class, the winter break packet in the backpack.

Is there a Kindergarten Christmas math packet?

Yes, at $6.95. Every question is written out for an adult to read aloud, in type big enough for small hands: counting, writing numbers, comparing, shapes and first addition facts. It is also in the K-5 bundle, $29.95 for all six grades against $41.70 bought separately.
